Kenya recorded its first Ebola death on Tuesday, according to the country's health minister. The patient was a citizen who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. Health authorities identified 28 contacts of the deceased person.
The death marks Kenya's entry into an outbreak that has accelerated across the north-eastern DRC since May. The DRC is experiencing its 17th Ebola outbreak overall. As of October 2, the country had recorded 8,463 confirmed cases and 4,082 deaths, according to the health ministry.
The strain circulating in the DRC is Bundibugyo, for which no vaccine or specific treatment exists.
